Thursday, April 04, 2002Jane Scott, the 82 year old rock critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer is retiring, acoording to this article. I don't know if it's awesome or scary that there's an 82 year old rock critic, a female scribe in a male dominated field none-the-less, writing about pop music for a major daily newspaper. It gives me inspiration, but it sort of scares me in that "holy-cow-that-could -be-you -in-50-years-still-writing-about-pop-music" kind of way.Speaking of pop music-- I finally heard "Stroke of Genie-us"-- the song which layers the vocals of Christina Aguleria's "Genie in a Bottle" over a Strokes instrurmental. It's amazing. Fire up your fave file sharing program and get your hand on a copy. posted by Randy on 2:40 PM | permanent link to this entry
Tuesday, April 02, 2002Rejoice, rejoice- Odd Todd has a new cartoon up and has redesigned his site, all of which can be found here. He cracks me up, some non-corrupting soul in Hollywood needs to give that boy a development deal. So, for my big DJ gig on Saturday night, I'm planning on playing a lot of cover songs. I'm under instructions from the artist to play stuff that is familar but goes by fast and/or makes you think "What was that?" Aside from mixing stuff up, I'm thinking covers are the best way to go. Send in your suggestions, okay? I've got a lot to work with, but I could always use more. Big shout out to San Francisco indie-rockers Shmoogie, who sent me a copy of their CD I Buried Snoopy to review. Which I will do soon, I promise. In the meantime, check out Shmoogie's web site for yourself. The press material they sent me compares them to Pavement, early Beck and Dinosaur JR. I haven't listed to the CD yes, so I couldn't tell you. posted by Randy on 12:24 PM | permanent link to this entry
Monday, April 01, 2002The mystery solved: Margaret took me to Los Angeles. We stayed at the Westin Bonaventure, the hotel that Arnold rides a horse through in True Lies. The bed there was perhaps the most comfortable I've ever slept in-- and guess what, you can buy one of your very own right here! Seriously, hook yourself up if you have the dough to do so with.We visited with a few friends and went to two parties. I won't be a star-fucker here in public, but one was at a Rock Star's house-- nice place, too. Good times were had by all. And my my back didn't go out on the drive down or on the drive home, which is great news. Usually on long drives I end up with a terrible back ache. That was the part Margaret said I would hate. In more Rocktober-ish news: my L.A. buddies were all shocked to hear about my re-apperication of Bob Seger, which just adds fuel to my fire to write about it. Soon, my pretties, soon. Don't forget-- If you're gonna be in San Francisco on April 6, you should come hear me (appearing in my nom-de-funk MC Hesher) do tha DJ thing at The El Ray Del Art Mind Roastingly Supreme Art Party. The art and booze will be cheap (check the prices, yo!) and the tunes will be excellent. It'll be at The 66 Balmy gallery here in SF from Thursday April 4th to Monday April 8th, 2002, but the big party is on Monkeys and Cheap Beer Night, which is Saturday, April 6 from 6-10 p.m. I'll be the dude spinning the tunes.
