This Week's New Releases Of Note:
- UnEarthed [BOX SET] - Johnny Cash (1 disc of his best stuff with producer Rick Rubin, 4 discs of previously unreleased stuff from the Rick Rubin-years, including a whole disc of gospel material. Guests include Fiona Apple, Flea, Willie Nelson, Carl Perkins, Joe Strummer and Tom Petty. This is a must own.)
- This Is Not a Test - Missy Elliott (Did you see her doing "Riverdance" on "Saturday Night Live?" Go, Missy, Go!)
- The Singles 1992-2003 - No Doubt (includes that crappy cover of "It's My Life," yet excludes their cover of "Love To Love You, Baby" from the "Zoolander" soundtrack. There is no justice in the world.)
- Boom Box - No Doubt (Box set that includes b-sides, covers and live stuff-- yet still no "Love To Love You Baby." Very weird.)
- Derrty Versions: The Reinvention - Nelly (New versions of all the hits -- a.k.a. what P. Diddy calls a re-mix)
- Remixed & Revisited [EP] - Madonna (remixes galore and the "Like A Virgin"/"Hollywood" Medley from the 2003 MTV VMAs)
- Folklore [ENHANCED] - Nelly Furtado
- Take a Look in the Mirror - Korn
- Films About Ghosts [ENHANCED] - Counting Crows (best of compilation)
- Top of the World Tour - Dixie Chicks
- Live At The Grand Olympic Auditorium- Rage Against the Machine (I saw a broadcastof this concert on MTV2 the other day. It's pretty hot stuff.)

- The Media Octopus Loses a Tentacle (Salon subscription or free day-pass required)
If Congress passes it's end of the year spending bill and Bush doesn't veto it, the FCC will be forbidden from easing TV ownership rules. The above linked Salon piece does a good job of describing the motivations of all the playersin this battle and framing this as a large (possible) victory in a long war.
- Warner Music Deal Sealed, Putting Bronfman on Comeback (N.Y. Times free registration required)
Suddenly, artists like R.E.M., The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Alanis Morissette and Madonna are signed to an indie label. An indie-label worth just over 2 billion dollars, but an indie-label none-the-less.
- Stripes' White Scales 'Cold Mountain'
Jack White of The White Stripes will contribute five tracks to the Cold Mountain Soundtrack, which is due in stores on Dec. 16. White, who also appears in the flick, will contribute covers of "Wayfaring Stranger," Howlin' Wolf 's "Sittin' on Top of the World," the Ralph Stanley-popularized "Great High Mountain" and the originals "Never Far Away" and "Christmas Time Will Soon Be Over." Pre- order the Cold Mountain Soundtrack by clicking here.
- Could I Get That Song in Elvis, Please? (N.Y. Times free registration required)
Vocaloid is here. What is it? Software that basically perfectly mimics a human's singing voice. And you thought pop was processed before-- just you wait.
It's no Let Them Sing It For You, though. Type in lyrics and hear 'em sung cut-and-paste style by your fave artists. (Found via donewaiting.com)
- Sex, Lies, and Audiotape
Karen O of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Har Mar Superstar interview each other and great rock n' roll weirdness ensues. (found via donewaiting.com
- iPod's Dirty Little Secret
Really funny QuickTime movie of one man's efforts to tell the world that the iPod battery isn't replaceable and runs out after about 18 months. Kepp fighting, brother (if only becuase my beloved iPod battery needs replacin') Found via donewaiting.com
