I Think My IPod Is Depressed
Today's random song selections on the way to work, presented in the order they were played:

-"Girlfriend In A Coma"- The Smiths
-"I Can't Believe You Actually Died"- The Microphones
    -"Pretend We're Dead"- L7

Seriously. It casued me to chuckle and I thought maybe it might pick some "die mothafukka die mothafukka die" gangsta rap next, but instead it went for "Tight Fittin' Jeans" by Conway Twitty

As an added bonus, my batteries ran down a few songs later.

    Q. Say, Randy, you just moved to Santa Monica, didn't you?

    A. Yup.

    Q. And you're a big Prince fan, aren't you?

    A. Yup.

    Q. And you work in the music industry, right?

    A. Yup.

    Q. That's what I thought. Does this mean you'll be going to the Grammys in Los Angeles and seeing Prince?

    A. Nope.

    Q. Okay, next round. Prince is legendary for playing after-shows, right?

    A. Yup.

    Q. Is he playing a Grammy's after-show?

    A. Yup.

    Q. You must be going to that, right?

    A. You bet you sweet bippy I am. House of Blues. Midnight. Be there or be nowhere, you sukkas.

    Q. Wow, how did you get tickets for such an event? Some kind of crazy music industry insider connection, right?

    A. Wrong. I am a Prince geek, so of course I am a member of The NPG Music Club. Memebrship has its privlidges-- such as the right to buy two tickets for $150.00 for above mentioned after-party.

If the concert is funky enough, you can probably lookfor me doin' the cabbage patch and the running man in the middle of the Sunset Strip on a forthcoming episode of E!'s "Celebrites Uncensored."

    • Obligitory Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake Stuff
Okay, first off, anyone who really thinks that Jane Jackson's breast was exposed due to a "wardrobe malfunction" is out of their minds. Second thing, thank god for TiVo-- that way I could be offended on my own schedule-- again and again if really needed. I thought she was wearing a stripper's pastie, but, alas, it was a nipple ring-type contraption. The F.C.C. is gonna investigate, maybe even hand out some fines.

    • Nirvana Bump Bizkit Off Dial
Neat Rolling Stone article about a handful of alt-rock stations that have adopted a "classic alternative" format, which is actually 60% new stuff that sound like old stuff and 40% actual old stuff. Have radio stations had a sudden change of heart and actually decided to play-- gasp-- good music No. Beer companies need to cater to the over-21 crowd, and us Genxers just can't get enough of that crazy grunge rock. Plus "Hey Ya!", every hour on the half hour.

    • An Ode To My Record Store Guy
"Having a record store guy who understands my taste is as important to me as a good hairdresser is to someone else." If that sentence rings true to you, the above linked article is a good read. If the that statement doesn't ring true to you, then I have no idea what you are doing reading this blog.

    • Cypress Hill Revive With 'Death'
Also on those retro-alternative stations-- "Insane In The Brain" every three hours on the quarter hour. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Anyway, Till Death Do Us Part comes out on March 23, so mark your calendars. It will feature appearances by by Mobb Deep's Prodigy and Twin, Damian Marley and Tim Armstrong of Rancid

    • Vines Taking Countrymen On Tour
Dude-- The Vines/Jet/The Living End. Rock-and-Roll!!!!!!!!!!! That bill couldn't *be* more Australlian unless a Men At Work/Midnight Oil supergroup made a surprise appearance covering Oliva Newton-John songs.

    • Buy The "Freaks And Geeks" DVD
This is not a suggestion. This is an order.

    • Buddyhead's Rules of Rock
It's good to readthis about once a year, just to refresh yourself.

    • Soul music 101: Taking a walk through the history of Stax Records
The Chicago Sun Times tours The Stax Museum of American Soul Music with Songwriter David Porter, who co-wrote and co-produced much of the infamous label's awesome catalog. Nice reading if you hav a minute or two.

    • A Visual Tour Of The Replacements' Stomping Grounds
Photos of places they lived, played hung out, and sang about.
